I read to my nine-year-old daughter every night, it is one of our favorite times together. She particularly loves mysteries, so this book seemed like a sure fire winner. How wrong I was! I am so amazed at all of the great reviews here, I just can’t figure out what it is about this book that would inspire them. The opening was promising, and did pull my daughter in right away with the promise of secrets, adventure and mystery. It took off so well- and then just fizzled, with no real answers or resolution at the end of the book. Worse, there were disturbing sequences involving torture and murder- these towards the end of the story, or we never would have continued reading. Perhaps the author is planning a sequel, which would explain why so little was resolved- but by the end of the book, we were just so glad it was over that we will not be watching or hoping for one.

If you like this book, please check out the classic children’s books Ellen Raskin wrote in the 1970s.

Bosch is borrowing Raskin’s typefaces, her use of design and her sense of games within books. Try Figgs & Phantoms, The Tatooed Potato and Other Clues and ESPECIALLY The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel).
