This book is an excellent book to establish a broad fundamental understanding of surgery, but detailed enough to use as reference. Every medical student who plans to pursue a career in a surgical field should read this book prior to graduation from medical school.

Unlike voluminous texts like Harrison’s, I find this text written in such a fashion that it becomes a chore to read. Given, I am not going into surgery, but any well written textbook should hold someone’s interest. I find the book too vague and low yield for medical students and probably too simplistic for surgical residents. Needless to say, I am going to try to sell it before the new edition comes out.

Better than Greenfield and Schwartz. Of course has the pitfalls of most textbooks with out of date references, but not much to do about that. Good outline of physiology and pathophys of diseases and has a decent, not great, description of procedures. The changes they made from previous editions were good ones, making this the best core book available.

We, surgical trainees in Malaysia, can be divided into 2: those who prefer American textboks, and those who chooses British ones. The trend lately is shifting heavily to the former. Among the american textbooks Shwartz is most popular by far, followed by Sabiston.
I tried very hard to read Shwartz but found it boring (and induces sleep too easily for a busy resident!) with poor subsections/paragraphing to highlight important points.
I was fortunate enough to discover Sabiston. Its format would appeal to both the american and brit group with clear subsections and usage of easy language. Chapters usually starts with a historical prespective which is not too daunting, but enough to entice readers to appreciate developments in a particular field. Another gem is the selected articles section which highlights important, must-read, classical articles at the end of each chapter.
So to those of you who find Shwartz too difficult to read, I recommend this excellent textbook.
