Targus TXL617 17 XL Notebook Backpack
I purchased this bag because I needed a bit of a larger bag for my laptop but it was SWIMMING in this bag. Plus, the bag is 150% bigger than the bag I was trying to replace, which means it would not be great to use on an airplane. Lots of pockets/zippers/etc. Probably too many. Seems like great construction but just not logistically great.

This ROLLERBAG is not and can never be a backpack as was mentioned in another review. It easily accommodates my 17″ HP laptop of 7.7 lbs along with its aftermarket neoprene jacket padding, also a power brick and a host of travel mice, 4 port hubs, CD/DVD ROM cases, USB cables, screen cleaning kits and laptop cool pad.
Construction seems more than adequate – with the sturdy nylon fabric stiffened and braced in strategic places, velcro tie-down straps, telescoping handle and free spinning wheels. Self repairing zippers close compartments easily.
My last laptop was a 15.4 inch – and I purchased a “Swiss Army” roller bag not made for larger 17′ laptops. This roller bag is a standard the 17″ Targus fails to meet.
The Targus 17″ could use one more section for a printer or even a second laptop – more netted compartments to held small items in place and a more comfortable set of carry handles. The Swiss Army bag also has a top surface pouch that made access for car keys, change and other small items both secure and easy to reach.
The Targus 17″ handle mechanism is adequate to handle the weight, torque and bulk of the roller bag – but when stowed often fails to line up with its zippered opening – causing one to resch inside the zippered compartment and hunt to pull out the handle through its proper opening.
A very correctable design fault is the uncomfortable hard plastic carry handles – which dig welts into you palms or fingers. Too wide to roll down many airplane aisles – carrying the bag by these handles any great time or length is actually PAIN INDUCING. There is no easy way to carry this bag using these HARD plastic handles.
These minor design issues are more easily forgotten by a great price point from Amazon. Better bags out there??? Yes – of course. Better roller bag for the money for a 17″ laptop? I’m still looking…
